WE PLEDGE!
A Million Pledges

A Million Pledges

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

What started as a simple thought lead to several discussions on organ pledging, transplants, the organ transplant black market and why organ pledging is one of the prime needs of healthcare in India today.

Today, lakhs of people are suffering from chronic organ failure due to lack of organs for transplantation. The flourishing black market does nothing but prey on the poor. The lack of organs available for transplant means that only the uber rich can afford this treatment, if they are able to find an eligible organ in the first place!

The immune system of the human body has the uncanny ability of being able to rid itself of any problem. A part of that uncanny ability is being able to accept a transplanted organ, within fixed parameters, and accept and adapt to it. This uncanny ability has and can save many a life IF enough organs are available.

We can completely wipe out deaths and blindness in India due to lack of organ availability if all of us come together and do one simple thing, pledge our organs and tissues. It is a myth that religions do not permit organ / tissue donations. In fact, all religions promote it.

At the end of the day as George Bernard Shaw said, “I want to be all used up when I die” A Million Pledges is nothing but a drive to address this need for ethical and legal availability of organs and tissues for transplantation. Working under the aegis of National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), we will be working towards achieving this goal.

And to that end we appeal to you to do that one simple thing, pledge. Pledge to donate your organs and tissues after your death, save several lives and bring happiness to their families.

ABOUT US

“Let him who would move the world, first move himself.” – Socrates

Who are we… We are a bunch of 36+ year old kids who have rediscovered childhood.

One fine day in 2015, our current School Principal Father Godfrey D’Sa called a few ex-students who were regularly in touch with the school to discuss what should be done to celebrate the Centenary Year of our school, St. Joseph’s High School, Wadala, Mumbai. The ball was set rolling after the first meeting and those few contacted another few and soon around 70-80 of us turned up for the meetings.

Having rediscovered our connection to our school and realizing that we have an Alumnus from practically every conceivable field, we decided to join hands and undertook and successfully completed several projects to upgrade the school infrastructure. Subsequently an Alumni Trust, SJW ALUMNI TRUST, was also formed to carry forward the work being done and to undertake future initiatives.

One of these initiatives is “A Million Pledges”.

Having received full support and backing of our School Principal Father Godfrey D’Sa and the School Management, we decided to take it forward and contacted the National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) in New Delhi who were extremely happy with our initiative and agreed to give us their full support. NOTTO is a National level organization set up under Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

#stoptrashplant

A brilliant and hard hitting video about how human organs are literally wasted, trashed, if not donated.

Everyone of us can save up to 8 lives, which will impact the lives of at least 40 others. If not more. So it is up to us. What we want to do. Trash or not trash.

Organ donation is an act of heroism. Become a hero and save lives.

Let's become aware of how important it is to be informed and make an informed decision, let's discuss it with the family and with our loved ones.
